  • The Who Where and When of Knysna Angling? - Kyle Smith from SANParks
Monitoring of recreational and subsistence angling on the Knynsa estuary has now entered its third year and is showing some interesting results. Those of you who have been reading the Honda Marine Newsletter may remember that in essence this program has been designed to find out how many people are fishing, what their motives are for fishing, how long do they fish for, what fish are being targeted and what fish are being caught (species, numbers and sizes), what bait and how much bait is being used and finally what are the anglers’ perceptions and knowledge regarding fishery management and the associated regulations. In a previous article I provided some of the results concerning this last point and highlighted the general low knowledge base amongst anglers regarding the current fishery regulations. In this article I thought we would explore some trends in who is fishing and how much fishing is occurring.

  • The Knysna Seahorse by Kyle Smith (SANParks)
I'm pretty sure that everyone has heard of the Knysna Seahorse and anyone who has visited the SANParks office at Thesen Island would have seen some in the reception area aquarium. I have been privileged enough to visit these curious creatures on numerous occasions and have often listened to the comments and questions made by all manner of visitors. It seems that the seahorse is well known but that not much is generally known about the seahorse. So I thought that for this article I would explain a little about our elusive and enigmatic talisman.

  • Some Pointers On Fishing Regulations by Kyle Smith (SANParks)
In my last article I tried to highlight the low knowledge base amongst anglers regarding the relevant fishery regulations, and that this ignorance combined with active non-compliance is undermining fishery and conservation management. I would like to pick up on this theme and at the same time provide some information on the main fishing regulations.

  • The Cost Of Ignorance And Non-Compliance by Kyle Smith (SANParks)
Recreational angling is essentially an open fishery, meaning that anyone can participate provided they obtain the necessary licenses. The open nature of the fishery makes it impossible to try and regulate catch rates through effort controls (i.e. the limitation on how many anglers can fish). Instead recreational fishery management relies on the use of marine protected areas, seasonal closures for certain species and limitations on the number and sizes of fish that can be kept per day. However, the adequate functioning of these regulations is reliant on the degree of compliance amongst the anglers which in turn depends to a large extent on the motives for fishing and the knowledge base amongst the anglers regarding the regulations. In other words if an angler does not know the regulations they by default cannot abide by the regulations. Two important questions to answer would therefore be a). what proportion of recreational and subsistence anglers know the current fishery regulations? and b). what proportion of these anglers then abide by them?

  • The Saga continues - 2-Stroke vs 4-Stroke
Reader’s of last month’s edition, will know that we ran an article on 2-Strokes versus 4-Strokes, with information taken straight from the guys behind the products. Without it turning into a mud-slinging contest, the article contained facts from the guys in-the-know, and we here at the magazine, were happy with the outcome. However, at the time of going to print, Honda Marine Head Office wasn’t available for comment. Since reading the article, Dave Hoets of Honda Marine Knysna said that things aren’t quite as they were made out to be by some of the manufacturers. Dave has always been extremely environmentally conscious. He puts his name brand aside in an effort to add his penny’s worth.

  • Wildnerness Lakes Bathymetry Mapping
    By Kyle Smith – SANParks

With the aid of the semi-rigid inflatable donated by Honda Marine Knysna and the Garmin 420s chartplotter and sonar combination unit donated by Knysna Coastal Conservancy and the Pezula Private Estate Homeowners Association, a new project within the Garden Route National Park, in particular the Wilderness Lake System, has recently been started. The project aims to complete a comprehensive bathymetry mapping exercise of all three lakes (namely: Island Lake, Langvlei and Rondevlei) and from this data develop a set of three-dimensional maps that could then be used for future project planning and also monitoring long term changes occurring within each lake due to sedimentation or erosion.
