Exciting times ahead for Honda Marine with Miami debut of all NEW Honda BF250HP Debuting last month at the 2011 Miami International Boat Show, the concept Honda BF250 outboard provided the first indication of the design direction for the all-new BF250 horsepower outboard which is planned to be available in South Africa from December 2011. Honda’s NEW BF115HP’s go on NSRI Test The outboard engine of choice for the majority of the world’s Sea Rescue operators is the Honda based on their reliability, high performance and advanced technology, criteria which is absolutely crucial in the dangerous and lifesaving work that Sea Rescue crews carry out on a daily basis. I guess then that it was only a question of time before Honda outboards were tested with the South African NSRI.
To facilitate this, a pair of new Honda BF115HP outboards were rigged to the Hout Bay Sea Resue’s 7.6m Gemini SRI which had previously been rigged with 2 x Evinrude 115HP E-Tec's. Initially acceleration tests were done (with more tests to follow) where the boat had 4 people on board, and was fully loaded with equipment and fuel. The results were as follows : 0 to 10 knots – Honda 5 seconds/ Evinrude 9 seconds; 0 to 20 knots - Honda 15 secs/ Evinrude 19 secs. Suffice to say that the ground crew at the Hout Bay Sea Rescue base station were ecstatic with the results, in the meantime we’ll keep you posted on further tests and developments.

Classic Rowing Boats from Whisper The Whisper range which consists of the 280, the 370 and the 400, offers a great alternative to the inflatable option because it’s a classic rowing boat which is hardy in terms of usage and which can be left at the side of a lagoon, dam or river without concern for damage by the elements. The 280 and the 370 both weigh in at between 46 and 49kgs respectively and so are roof rack friendly, the 400 weighs in at about 65kgs and would need a small trailer of some description. All the boats have built-in buoyancy.

| BOATING TIP OF THE MONTH |
 | Docking in Style with Twin Prop Boats by David H.Pascoe
The unfortunate thing about docking in crowded marinas is probably less a matter of the embarrassment of hitting some one else's boat, but that there are usually so many people around to see you do it! We've all screwed up one time or another, so we know how embarrassing it is to be standing there, half panic-stricken at the controls of our boat (which is out of control) while a half dozen of your dock mates are all standing there trying to suppress a smirk or scrambling to protect their boats from the impending disaster.
|
The first thing to understand about docking situations is the need to stay calm and never engage in hasty control actions. That happens because basically you don't know what to do, but you just feel you have to do something. Many people are too cautious, and try to manoeuvre the boat so slowly that the wind or tide catches the boat and they lose control anyway. Others move too fast, applying one over-reaction against another. Be aware that the ONLY way you can learn to maintain precise control, without over or under-reacting, is by learning to develop absolute control of your boat and the only way to do that is by taking the time to learn and practice. Far too many boat owners just won't bother, and that's why marinas on Saturday afternoon can be very entertaining just watching people inexpertly trying to dock their boats.
