The Sinking Boat Can you believe that this boat is real? Yes, French artist Julien Berthier has designed a fully functional boat to look as if it is sinking. The 6.5m (21ft) yacht was cut in half with a new keel and motor added so it remains in the sinking position while being fully functional. He describes it as "the permanent and mobile image of a wrecked ship that has become a functional and safe leisure object."

 | Speeding Up Mother Nature's Very Own CO2 Mitigation Process
ScienceDaily (Jan. 19, 2011) — Using seawater and calcium to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) in a natural gas power plant's flue stream, and then pumping the resulting calcium bicarbonate in the sea, could be beneficial to the oceans' marine life. Greg Rau, a senior scientist with the Institute of Marine Sciences at UC Santa Cruz and who also works in the Carbon Management Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, conducted a series of lab-scale experiments to find out if a seawater/mineral carbonate (limestone) gas scrubber would remove enough CO2 to be effective, and whether the resulting substance -- dissolved calcium bicarbonate -- could then be stored in the ocean where it might also benefit marine life.

Knysna’s Season
Shaun van Eck, CEO Knysna Tourism, gave us the following brief feedback on Knysna’s past season.
The main trends that have emerged are as follows :
|
 |
- We were forecasting a flat year-on-year season, but it appears that we were up on last year.
- The trend of shorter holidays for many was once again evident, with an average of 7 to 10 days.
- Price is still playing a major role in accommodation.
- There was an increase in restaurant business and the poor weather between Christmas and New Year would have contributed to this – spend per head is still under pressure.
- Activities showed good numbers, and with many the cheaper options were the most popular.
- It appears that our share in the Black Diamond market (Black Diamonds are members of South Africa’s fast growing, affluent and influential black community) is growing.
- Bookings for February are reasonable.
- We are predicting slow, but steady growth for the next 3 years.
- We will be launching exciting new initiatives, including an e-marketing drive, promotion with partner towns and the launching of further events and festivals.

 | Houseboating with the Ashwells and their trusty Honda 9.9HP By Colin Ashwell
My houseboat "Driftwood" was built by myself in the period 1993 to 1996 almost entirely from the floor up including a huge galvanised trailer to match. The original hull was a 1972 Buttcat to which I added a third centre hull for added buoyancy and also to allow me to lower the inner floor level to keep the overall height down and still allow 1.85 meters head room in the cabin. It has berths for up to 3 people plus a fourth bunk that folds down like on a train. The heads has a port potty and wash basin and there is a small galley with gas stove, sink, etc. The only way to shower is via a solar heated shower on the stern deck!!
